Araya’s Diary Part One
Researched by: Cassy

April First Two Thousand Five
La Caruna, Spain

It is the day of my sixteenth birthday and I felt really weird when I woke up. My best friend Freya is here and she got me a book of elfin spells. I can tell exactly where it came from and how old it is, because I’m a mythology freak.

I hate Rick sooo much right now; I just know he’s going to ruin it. Rick is my nineteen-year-old brother, Mom won’t kick him out and I think he’s too old to keep. He hates me too but he’s too paranoid to move out, well I call it paranoid, but he’s got some disease that makes him that way. Sometimes I even feel sorry for him. Sometimes I help him take his medicine. He stopped taking it a month ago and he won’t take it anymore. Apparently there are “Monsters speak through that box, they do!” But we know they don’t Today he took his medicine, because he wanted to make me happy, he said, “I will take it only to make you happy, not because I want to.” That made me happy, just to hear him say something sane.

My brother is a big, fat, stupid, paranoid pig. Well, not really, he may be paranoid but he’s still really good in school and has girls hanging all over him. In other words, he’s a prep. A paranoid prep. Rick snatches The Book out of my hands. I punch him.

“Why do you like these stupid books?” He said to me.“ They’re so ugly!” This is what happens when he takes his meds.

“They are not! It’s the Fairy Bible!” I say trying to get it away from him.

“Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Fairy Bible? hahahahaha! You are stupid just like it!”

“Oh yeah? You can’t even read proper!” I start to cry.

“You need Mom to read to you!”

Suddenly Mom yelled,“RICK, GET OVER HERE RIGHT NOW!! You know not to make fun of your sister’s disability! Now say sorry!” I snickered, still trying to cry.

“I have a disability too!” Rick exclaimed.

“Rick.” She gave him ‘The Look’.

“I’m sorry Araya. You’ll get better at reading!” he mumbled quickly.

“I’m getting better ever since Freya started helping me!” I choked, not crying anymore.

“Well, Araya, you need a better tutor than just Freya.”

“No!” I say, defending my best friend. “Watch and listen!” I start to read the first sentence of the Dragon chapter of one of my Myth books.

“Dragons are found in mostly Europe, North America and South America.” I read fluently.

“Wow Araya, you’ve really moved along!” I start up the stairs.

“Thanks Mom!”

“Oh, and Araya?”

“Yes?” I call back down.

“You were sent a letter from a place called AMI.” She told me.

“AMI? I’ve never heard of it.” She gives it to me. I walk to my room to open the strange letter. It said:

Dear Araya Addams,

We are glad to announce that you have been accepted to AMI, Academy for the Magick and Immortal. Please do not inform your parent or guardian. Tomorrow you will be gone from your home and into AMI. “Mom! Dad! I’m going on a sleepover!” I yelled after I had read the letter and filled out the form.

“Why?” Mom yelled up the stairs. Jeez! She has to ask why for everything!

“Because! I’m going to Freya’s” I yelled down, packing.

“OK! Do you want me to drive you?” Dad called up also. He has to drive me everywhere!

“No! I’ll walk.”

“OK”

Knock, knock, knock, knock. I arrived at Andrew’s a day later, tired.

“What?” Wow, Rude.

“It’s Araya.”

“Who’s Araya?” Doesn’t he know?

“Just open the door! I’m tired!” He opened it.

In the door stood a teenager of about 16.

“Are you Andrew?” I questioned, knowing that he probably was.

“Yes.” I thought as much.

“Have you ever seen this letter?” I wave the letter in his face.

“Hold it still! Yes! Oh! You’re my traveling partner! Come In!”

“Uuummm OK?”

I walk in, pocketing the letter.

“This is the traveling stone.”

“Oh! I’ve seen those in books before! In my Myth Books!”

“Yes, we are going to travel to AMI with it.”

“Travel, with this tiny stone? How?”

“You will see, but first, we will sleep. This is your bed.” It was a comfortable-looking bed with a warm blanket.

“Uuumm OK.”

I woke up not knowing where I was. Then I remembered I’m at Andrew’s!

“Andrew?” I called.

“Yes?” Ok, he was still here.

“This is your breakfast.” It was a large bowl of my favourite cereal and a plate of scrambled eggs!

“It’s my favourite.” He said, not knowing if I would like it.

“Mine too! Really?”

“Yeas, really!” I said when I had finished.

“Ok” He said. “Let’s go.” We touch the traveling stone. I instantly feel a tingling sensation and I was jerked out of reality. I started to scream, I then heard Andrew’s voice. “Don’t scream it’ll rip the voice box out of your throat.” Well that made me fell better!

“Thanks.” I yelled, back chokingly.

“Okay we’re here!” Andrew called. Instantly I felt the tingling and the pulling stop. I could breath! “That is not the best way of traveling I would choose.” I gasped.

“Well get used to it.” I heard a voice from nowhere.

“Andrew? Is that you?” I hear it again.

“Yes.” It sounds like Andrew. Andrew was changed, he was somewhat younger.

“I can hear you but I can’t see you!” And again.

“I know, I’m right …” I feel a tap on my shoulder. I twirl around, grab his arm and fling his body forward, thud. “What was that for?” He sputtered.

“Sorry, reflexes.” I smiled, and then I hear another voice, one with more authority.

“Never again will that happen within these walls.” She said quietly. I now saw her, she was more majestic than the Queen herself, and I had insulted her.

“I’m sorr…” She cut me off in mid sentence.

“That was amazing! Those were the greatest reflexes AMI has ever seen!” I was amazed! I never expected a praise!

“Oh! Thank you!” She put her arm around my shoulder.

“Now come, I shall show you AMI’s fighting Arena.” While she led me off she told me of all the greatest fighters that have ever come to AMI. Andrew sat on the ground sputtering.

“What? She hurt me! Why does she get compliments!?! ”

A squire walked in much later with a struggling Andrew, a woman walked in soon after. She curtsied to me. “This is your personal maid. All of the servants and maids that are not wit another student will obey your slightest wish and command.” Explained the Headmistress.

“Wow, A maid!” I exclaimed.

“I will explain everything later. Now, Ella, take Araya to her Quarters.”

“Yes madam.” The maid curtsied again.

“Oh Araya?”

“Yes?”

“The form?” I hand the Headmistress the form.

“Follow me M’lady.

” I shrugged and smiled a sheepish smile at Andrew.

“Bye Andrew, see you later.” I said.

“Yep, see you later.” He waved.

“I will see you later too, in the fighting arena. ” The Headmistress smiled.

“Uhh I guess.” I said sheepishly.

“Your room is this way M’lady.”

I woke up the next day with Ella hanging over me.

“Aarrgghh!! What are you doing?”

“I was waiting for you to wake M’lady. What would you like for breakfast?”

“I would like some hot pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream, hot waffles with the same thing and a large mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows.” I was really hungry and cold that morning.

“Of course M’lady, right away.” And left, she came back soon carrying a large plate piled high with steaming pancakes and waffles. To the side was a very large mug of steaming hot chocolate.

“Thank you Ella.” I said, sipping my hot chocolate.

“Of course M’lady. Be sure to go to the fighting arena once you’re finished.” Oh! I had completely forgotten!

“Yes! Thank you for reminding me!”

“Of course M’lady” After I had finished I was in a huge rush to get down to the arena. I ended up having to brush my long, blonde hair while I was going down. I got to the fighting arena the Headmistress was already there.

“You are late.” She had a solemn expression on her face.

“I know, I’m sorry” I hung my head.

“No need, all of the great fighters were late on their first day. It is a sign, of greatness.” I was surprised. I must be great! “Let’s start off with something easy. Why don’t you try cuffing those dummies? ” She smiled.

“Ok!” I run toward the dummies. Suddenly, the dummies start racing for me, my heart was beating like a drum, I throw my arm out waiting for the impact dn it came. Like a train at full speed. It almost knocked me over but it didn’t, I stayed fast to the ground and it stopped the enchantment.

“Enchanted dummies, nice.” Now I knew why she had smiled, she enchanted them!

“I know it brings out the best in all the fighters.”

I hear laughter.

“Hahahaha!! You should’ve seen your face!!

Hahahaha!” Andrew says, clutching his stomach. I smile dangerously.

“Want that to happen to you?” He shuts up and his eyes grow wide.

“N..N..No..No thank you.” I start to laugh.

“You should’ve seen your face!” I almost bust a gut laughing so hard.

“Ok ok, that is enough!” The Headmistress yelled.

“We’re sorry.” We said in unison. I punched Andrew playfully.

“That is all right. Now, let’s get back to work.” I trained for two hours before we went to lunch. I was extremely exhausted. When I got back to my room I felt really sick. I laid in my bed and called Ella to get me some tea. “Ella!” I called.

“Yes M’lady?”

“Do you know why I’m so sick?”

“Yes M’lady, I do. You are sick because you are going through your Elfin changes.”

“Elfin changes?” I questioned.

“Yes M’lady, Elfin changes.”

“What are Elfin changes?”

“The Headmistress will be the better one to tell.

Shall I call her in?”

“Yes, please Ella.”

The headmistress walked out.“ I hope you understood. If you have any more questions, come to my office.”

“Of course Headmistress.”

“Now, you will be getting better by tomorrow. That is when you will get your outfit, first mission and steed.”

“Really? Wow! First mission! Thanks Headmistress.”

“Of course, it will start off small.”

“Yeah, I bet.” it was a different voice, Andrew’s voice.

“Andrew!”

“What?”

“Don’t, I’ll punch you.”

“No, please don’t!” He whimpered.

“Stop being such a bay!” Andrew glared at me.

I went to the fighting arena, I was not late.

“Glad to see you are not late.”

“Of course not, it’s my second day.”

“Now for your outfit,” It was a tight black criss-cross belly shirt, with tight bell bottom pants they looked like they were made to fit my tall, slender frame. She thrusted the set out to Andrew.

“Thanks, but I don’t think it’ll fit.”

“Not you, you dimwit,” I say in disgust “Me! Thanks Headmistress!” I snatch it away from Andrew. The look of disgust still wrinkling my pretty face.

“Now, your steed.” She takes me outside to the stables where she goes into a stall with glowing paint. She comes out with…

“A Dragon! Aren’t those dangerous?” I say nervously but controlled.

“No, not this species. They are harmless to those who are kind to them.”

“Really? Is it male or female?”

“Male, we find the males fight better. The females tend to the babes more.”

“Ok, when do I get to ride him?”

“You get a lesson right now.”

“Really? Cool! ”

“Get the saddle.” I go into the tack room and try to find a saddle. There was none.

“There is none.” I say in dismay.

“Yeas, I know!”

“Do I still get to ride?”

“Yes, but first, you make a saddle.”

“I get to make one?”

“Yes, you do, come with me.” I follow her to a shack, with wet saddles that were hung to dry. She took me into the shack.

“See that block of wood and bunch of clay?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Good, now go get glue, a chainsaw., a chisel, a template and a nameplate.” I go get the stuff, it was fairly easy. My legs just go to the places and I get them.

“Was it easy?”

“Yes, surprisingly.”

“That was your sixth sense, direction. You now have six senses.”

“Really! Six senses? Cool!”

“Yes, very. Ok, now, you put the template on the wood with the clay.” I put it on.

“Now, shave the edges and bottom off curved, with the chainsaw.” I do.

“Now, take the chisel, and carve out the grooves.”

“How deep?”

“As deep as you feel is right.” I carve out the grooves.

“Now take off the template.” I do, there, was my saddle.

“Now put the leather on it.” I put the leather on.

“Put the nameplate on with the glue.” I put the nameplate on.

“Now etch our name on.” I etch.

“Good, now take the saddle to the water bath.” I do.

“Now put it in.” I put it in.

“Now come, you have to wait for it to soak, and then you have to wait for it to dry. For now, go meet your Dragon.” I walk over to my Dragon. He was majestic and mighty.

Hello Mistress

“Ummmmm, Hi?” I look around and my eyes come to rest on my Dragon.

Hello, Mistress, try to speak with your mind.

“How?”

It is easy, Mistress. Direct your thoughts to me, or just think what you are going to say.

“Ok, I’ll try”

Try as hard as you can Mistress.

Cool!

Yes, cool. It is called thoughtspeak. Mistress thoughtspeak every time you talk to me.

OK.

By the way, my name is Sunrise, Mistress.

Sunrise, nice name.

When are you going to ride me Mistress?

I don’t know Sunrise.

“Ok, time to take out your saddle and put it to dry.”

Ok, Headmistress.

“Regular speak, please.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Speak no mind of it, Now, come on.” We walk to the shack and take my saddle out of the bath.

“Ok now, you put it on the rack to dry.” I put it up.

“Is there a faster way?”

“Yes, there is.” She whistled and my dragon trotted up.

You want me to flame?

Yes. I say.

Ok Mistress He blew and fire came out like a river, as river of molten lava, it was so beautiful I wanted to stare at it forever, I walked toward it, I heard my name, I didn’t care, it was faraway this was closer, better. more beautiful than anything I have ever seen.

“Araya, Araya” I was instantly jerked back into reality.

“Araya! You could’ve been killed!”

“I couldn’t help myself, I was mesmerized!”

“Yes, I forgot, Dragon fire is mesmerizing, a trance, works on enemies.”

“Well, it’s dry.” I said, trying to change the subject.

“Yes time for your first lesson.” She said dryly.

Yes! My dragon and I both shout.

“I’m flying!” I yelled when I got into the air. It was the most dazzling sensation I have ever felt, apart from dragon fire. When we took off, Sunrise’s wings flapped once and I ebbed away from life I knew before, before all of this, before, my life as an Elf.
