Traveling Through Medieval Times

by

Shannon Wong

One day, our class took a field trip to the Royal Ontario Museum. On display, there were many artifacts from Medieval Europe. As Ben and I were closely examining the armor of the knights , a strange voice called our names. “Would you both like to experience life in Medieval society as in 1100 A.D. ?” We looked around to see the King Wizard appearing to us only. It was a great opportunity that we could not resist . As we nodded, we were instantly transported back to Medieval Europe.

On the first day of our journey in time, we were astonished to find ourselves dressed as peasants pulling oxen on the field instead of being a knight and a princess. After a back-breaking day, we followed one of the peasants home. His house was a very small hut. We were served a chunk of bread and a bowl of mush for dinner.

Ben said, “I don’t know whether we should eat the mush or use it for glue.” “Shh ! Be polite.” I nudged him. As soon as it got dark, we all went to bed. It was a very long night as we were bitten by bugs all night.

When we got up the next morning, we were excited to find that the village was having a trade fair. Ben got up on his soapbox and began talking about the universe and the planets. Lord Smith came by and listened for a while , then invited us to the castle. Wethought our dreams of becoming a knight and a princess were finally coming true. After arriving at the Great Hall in the castle, we realized that we had to perform as jesters. However, our performance was not impressive and we were sent to the dungeon.

We stayed there for the night and thought about an escape plan.

The next day, when the two servants came to the cell, Ben made a gross , smelly burp after the garlic , chili meal and the twoservants instantly fainted. We quickly dressed in their clothes anddashed to the kitchen. We witnessed a medieval feast. I was surprised, “Ben, they actually eat peacocks, seagulls and vultures?” “Wow ! They all use their fingers to eat and toss their leftovers to the dogs.” Ben replied. The minstrels were singing ballads that told of the brave deeds of knights and important events. People were dancing and enjoying acrobats’ and jugglers’ performances. There was an archery contest too.

Then we moved on to the stable. It was smelly and dirty. However, we saw some knights teaching squires to practice their weapons. Some young boys who were still pages were busy running errands for the lady. Ben found an old suit of armor. He quickly put it on and acted like a knight. However, he had tried about a dozen times to get on the horse without success. He wasvery disappointed. When he finally was ready, we heard people shouting at the gate. The castle was about to be attacked!

Lord Smith gave orders to all the knights for the castle’s defense. We were frightened to watch the enemies surrounding the castle. They were trying to force their way inside. Watchingthe battle, we realized that knights and princess were not as glorious as we had imagined. We joined the knights and rained stale bread on the enemies. We finally repelled the attack.

We were exhausted and had seen enough of the Middle Ages. We asked the King Wizard to yank us back into modern day.

He laughed and in a moment’s time we were back at the Royal OntarioMuseum staring at the Lord Smith statue.
